Yahtzee! New Learning & Education Board puts the fun in BGH’s Emergency Dept.

Playing games on company time is a risk that Belleville General Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) is willing to take!

Kathleen Kramer, Professional Practice Specialist, has taken the ED team huddle to the next level by rolling the dice on a new Learning and Education Board with themed trivia games!

Every month, Kathleen comes up with a new theme.  Last month it was Anemia, this month it is Sepsis. She has made this month into a Snakes & Ladders game,” explained Nicole Valade, Program Director of Emergency, Critical Care, Community and Rural Services.  “The intent is for the staff to attend the huddle board every day to review our metrics and talk about concerns, but now, with this new education board, also participate in a learning activity.”

Travis Boivin, Emergency Department Manager at BGH facilitates the revamped huddle conversation every day.

The Patient Care Leads (PCLs) haven’t been sorry about the friendly competition that this new learning board has ignited. The four PCL teams have been competing to see who can secure the most points at the end of the month. To get a point, the staff must choose a question about the theme and answer correctly. It has been so much fun that the teams have been continuing the trivia game on weekends. Even the paramedics have started to get involved when in the department.

The innovation and imagination involved in creating and utilizing the Learning & Education board is an excellent example of our new Quinte Health strategy at work. The team is improving the Care they provide by enhancing their education. And, at the same time, supporting Our People to be creative learn and lead!
