The Christmas tree standing in front of the Charlotte Sills wing at QHC-Belleville General Hospital (BGH) was donated in loving memory of Helen June Shannik. After working as a Hospitality Services Representative (HSR) in BGH’s Emergency Department for 10 years, Helen’s failing health forced her to leave her job in March of 2019.
Last year, the Shannik family donated the annual Christmas tree to BGH and Helen was inspired to do this one last time. As Helen witnessed the COVID-19 pandemic persist towards the holiday season, she believed that this tree would bring joy to the patients, staff and visitors of BGH during these challenging times.
Unfortunately, Helen passed away on October 23, 2020. Her husband, Merv, quickly contacted O’Brien Tree Service to ask for help to make Helen’s wish come true. O’Brien Tree Service donated their services to see that the Shannik tree was cut, transported and safely standing with twinkling lights. Atop the tree is a star handcrafted by Helen.
Thank you to the Shannik family and O’Brien Tree Service for providing our patients, staff and the community this beautiful tree.
