For the third month in a row- QHC Trenton Memorial Hospital has been listed in the ER Provincial Summary Report in the top two most improved medium volume community hospitals for patient length of stay.
When the department made the provincial improvement list in the report a few months ago, Manager Ruth Ann Hubbs was extremely proud of the improvement efforts of the team in decreasing the time patients are in the emergency department. At that time, she reinforced that while it was a great accomplishment, the difficult part would be in sustaining the change. Today, the team was celebrated for successfully sustaining the improved time for three consecutive months!
Vice President Jeff Hohenkerk joined Director Heather Campbell and Manager Ruth Ann Hubbs in dropping into the department to share the news- which was enthusiastically received by staff with cheers and high-fives! Heather and Jeff acknowledged that it is the focused efforts, ideas and team work of all staff, volunteers and physicians that have made for successful improvement initiatives in the TMH emergency department!
The report outlines metrics about wait times and performance for emergency departments in the 74 hospitals in Ontario that fall into the Pay for Results funding under the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Successful improvements lead to additional dollars to reinvest into the department. For example, the pay for results funding supports an extra nurse in the department to focus on navigating patient flow and for a physician assistant.
TMH ER length of stay (from the time the patient arrives until the patient leaves the department) is 5.2 hours based on the 90th percentile (9 patients out of 10). According to the report, the overall provincial length of stay is 8.1 hours.
