Medical Day Clinic opens at QHC TMH

QUINTE WEST, September 17, 2013 - A Medical Day Clinic that opened at QHC Trenton Memorial Hospital (TMH) on September 10 will help to ensure patients are receiving care in the most appropriate setting for their needs, while also helping to reduce ER wait times. The Medical Day Clinic will cater to patients who require non-emergency transfusions, infusions and other medical procedures. Prior to the Medical Day Clinic opening at TMH, patients needing these procedures have gone to the TMH emergency department or travelled to Belleville.

"Since patients needing these types of procedures do not require 'emergency' care, they could often be left waiting as the staff and physicians cared for patients needing more urgent medical attention," said Katherine Stansfield, VP & Chief Nursing Officer. "We also know that emergency departments are not always the ideal environment from the perspective of exposure to germs, noise or privacy. We are very pleased to be able to open a Medical Day Clinic at TMH to provide a more suitable environment for these patients to receive their care, with considerably shorter wait times."

The new clinic will be located in the Ambulatory Care area (previously the Special Care Unit) at QHC TMH and will be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting September 10. The Medical Day Clinic at QHC Belleville General Hospital will also now be open two days a week, Thursday and Friday. Patients needing the Medical Day Clinic services will be referred by their physician.

The Medical Day Clinic opened at QHC Belleville General Hospital (BGH) in early 2011 and had been operating four days a week. The Registered Nurse staff time will now be split between BGH and TMH so that each hospital will have a two-day per week clinic and patients in both communities can benefit equally.

The Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation has provided $115,000 of funding for the equipment and minor renovations for the TMH Medical Day Clinic.

QHC expects to have between 1,300 and 1,500 patient visits per year through the Medical Day Clinic.
