On April 8, Shawn Gilchrist (shown far left in photo) paid a visit to Belleville General Hospital to personally thank the staff who had provided exceptional care to his mother in her final days. As a token of appreciation, he donated a large painting which was originally a gift from him to his mother and once hung on her bedroom wall. He bought it for her to help brighten her days and wanted to share the painting with other people after her passing. “A lot of people who are here (in the hospital) could probably use something to distract them from what they are going through. We hope this painting will help take their mind off of what they are going through, even if for a second.”
Dr. Andrew Samis and Registered Nurse, Gen MacDonald were given special acknowledgement in Gilchrist’s original thank-you letter to the hospital. During the painting presentation, Gilchrist spoke about the amazing care that his mother received. “I don’t think you guys realize how much you’re appreciated. You gave us our privacy when we needed it and this is my way of saying ‘thank you’,” he said. For years, Gilchrist had given his mother three roses on every special occasion, each rose symbolizing a word in the phrase “I love you”. Although the painting includes three tulips (not roses), it reminded him of his tradition of giving three roses to his mother. He had it professionally framed and hung it on her bedroom wall.
The painting is now on display at BGH, Quinte 1 in the ICU waiting room.
