QHC Receives $3.4 Million in New Funding Tied to BGH Redevelopment

BELLEVILLE, January 17, 2012 - Quinte Health Care has received an additional $3.4 million in operating funding from the South East Local Health Integration Network (SE LHIN) as part of the ongoing redevelopment project at QHC Belleville General Hospital.

"We are thrilled to have received this additional funding in order to meet future health care needs in the region, as well as the additional volumes of patients that we are already seeing in our emergency rooms and intensive care unit (ICU)," said President & CEO Mary Clare Egberts.

This funding will be added to QHC's annual budget in order to open additional inpatient beds or increase services in medicine, surgery, rehabilitation, the ICU and Rehab Day Hospital. The funding is tied to increasing patient volumes in these areas over the next fiscal year and can be clawed back if the hospital doesn't show a measured increase compared to previous years.

"The South East LHIN is pleased to support QHC with this additional funding as they work to meet the growing needs of their community by ensuring improved access to high quality care," said LHIN CEO Paul Huras.

QHC BGH is in the midst of an extensive, seven-year redevelopment project that began with the construction of the new ICU and Charlotte Sills Wing that opened in 2009 and 2010. The next phase of the redevelopment includes new space for mental health, oncology, cardiopulmonary, a new emergency room, laboratory and surgical suites. The entire project is expected to be complete in 2014, with a total cost in $150 million range.

Although the funding is tied to the redevelopment only at QHC Belleville General Hospital, Ms. Egberts says all QHC hospitals and the entire region will benefit. "We can create better access to care at all four hospitals when there is additional capacity in Belleville to care for patients from around the region who require the more specialized services available at BGH."
