|PEC Residents can have their say about where the new hospital will be located|
Picton– 5/01/2017: In May, community partners and residents of Prince Edward County (PEC) can provide feedback on which of the two potential site options would be the best location for the new Quinte Health Care Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH).
Two sites are under consideration: the existing hospital site with the addition of donated land adjacent to the hospital, and the greenfield site by the H.J. McFarland Memorial Home. The steering committee will take dozens of considerations into account including the size and shape of the property, drainage, soil testing and other environmental considerations, zoning, community input, as well as access to utilities and other services.
Environmental testing was done on the existing site after the committee learned that a Director’s Order had been issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change in February regarding contaminants on the nearby 10 McFarland Drive. The soil and water testing on the current PECMH site, completed in April, shows nothing to preclude the committee from considering the existing site as an option.
How can PEC residents provide feedback? Effective immediately residents can provide input by: 1) Filling out an online survey by May 20th 2) Picking up a copy of the survey at the PECMH Foundation office, or 3) Attending the PECMH Site Selection Community Consultation Open House on May 15 from 4-6pm at the PEC Community Centre, 375 Picton Main Street in Picton.

The site selection process is part of next stage in Ontario’s proposal process for building a new hospital. In January, the planning partners received the approval to move to the next stage in the process– completion of the Stage 1 proposal. ‘Part A’ of the proposal is expected to be submitted to the South East Local Health Integration Network (SE LHIN) and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) by the end of May. ‘Part B’ of the Stage 1 proposal focuses on the future Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital - including an evaluation of the current site, investigation of site options, a high-level space plan and a cost estimate. In this stage, a recommendation must be made to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) regarding the site.
